What are the steps involved in tooth extractions?

We perform extractions to preserve your oral health and remove problematic teeth. If you have advanced gum disease or impacted wisdom teeth, extraction may be necessary. You can trust that we will conduct extractions in our office with the highest level of care, prioritizing your safety, comfort, and convenience.
If left unaddressed, a tooth requiring extraction can lead to complications, causing pain, infections, and additional dental issues. However, the process of removing them doesn't have to be an ordeal.

What is the reason for needing tooth extractions?

Extractions are usually the final option to save a tooth. Removing certain teeth can have a negative impact on your oral health, so it is recommended to remove them before they cause issues such as shifting, infection, or damage in the mouth. There are several reasons why you may need or want an extraction, including:
  • Wisdom teeth affected
  • Teeth severely damaged
  • Teeth cracked or broken beneath the gum line
  • Difficult-to-remove baby teeth
  • Prefer to avoid additional treatment

Who is eligible for tooth extractions?

To determine if an extraction is necessary, we will conduct an examination. It is typically advised for patients needing an extraction to proceed with the procedure. If a problematic tooth is left untreated, it can potentially result in future complications like infections and abscesses. Additionally, x-rays will be taken to assist in accurately assessing the need for an extraction.

What happens during a tooth extraction?

Firstly, we provide the choice between anesthetic or sedation based on your preference. During your consultation, we can discuss the various sedation options that are available. Once you feel at ease, we will proceed with the process of loosening and extracting the tooth. If required, we may also place sutures to close the gums. To manage any bleeding, we will ask you to bite down on gauze. In case you have been sedated, we will take you to a recovery room until you are completely awake. If general sedation was administered, it is crucial that a friend or family member accompanies you home. Lastly, we will provide you with important aftercare instructions that must be adhered to.
